If you are a lawful permanent resident of the United

States, and meet the statutory requirements, you can seek to become a U.S. citizen through the naturalization process. As a naturalized U.S. citizen, you will have the rights enjoyed by U.S. citizens, such as the right to vote.  Citizenship is a lifetime benefit. As a U.S. citizen, you cannot be deported if you commit a crime.

When Can I Seek Naturalization?

You can seek U.S. citizenship after you have held a green card and have maintained continuous residency in the United States for five years. You must have been physically present in the United States for at least half of the five-year period.

The required period of permanent residency is three years if you obtained your permanent residency based on marriage to a U.S. citizen and you are still married to the same spouse. You must have been physically present in the United States for at least half of the three-year period.

To become a U.S. citizen, you must prove that you are a person of good moral character.

Citizenship benefits for your family members:
As a U.S. citizen, you will have higher priority when petitioning for immigration for family members.
Your children under the age of 18 may be able to obtain U.S. citizenship through you.
