Preference Categories For Employment-Based Immigration
To obtain an employment-based immigrate as a relative of a legal permanent resident or citizen of the United States, you must obtain an immigrant visa number based on the preference category that is applicable to you. Those preference categories include:
- First preference: Priority workers (persons of extraordinary ability, outstanding professors and researchers, and certain multinational executives and managers)
- Second Preference: Professionals with advanced degrees or aliens with exceptional ability
- Third Preference: Skilled workers, professionals (without advanced degrees), and needed unskilled workers
- Fourth Preference: Special immigrants, including religious workers
- Fifth Preference: Employment-creation immigrants (investors)

Some people may qualify for immigration under more than one category.
